  5. Bootham Bar marks the northern entrance to the city, on the Great
  6. North Road. It is the only the only gate which stands on the site
  7. of a prevoius Roman one and patrs of it's structure date from the
  8. 12th century.

  10. The Bar was threatened with total demolition in 1832 but was saved
  11. by public outcry, although it lost it's barbican (a walled
  12. enclosure to the outer gate).
